THE FLOWER COGNITIVE STAGES
Lily
The Lily of the Valley hides in plain sight in the field. You don’t know it’s there until you stumble upon it. In the same way, a person living with dementia at this level has the social graces and compensatory skills to mask early cognitive decline.
Daisy
The Daisy is a bright ray of sunshine with multiple layers of petals. This person continues to be able to express a variety of functional skills, engaging in daily tasks if provided the correct environmental structure and supportive tools.
Violet
The Violet, simple yet beautiful in its deep purple hue, needs a lot of TLC to bloom and thrive. This person has significant to complete memory loss, very limited orientation, and is in need of significant assistance with day to day activities to maintain quality of life.
Rose
The red Rose, with the bud tightly closed in on itself, rarely yield a pleasant aroma. This person is very likely to express negative behaviors, and is at high risk for eloping, falls, infections, poisoning, weight loss, and medication refusals.
Bouquet
A combination of all flowers, the bouquet presents the most advanced challenges of the person living with dementia. At this level, it is very difficult for the care partners to provide day to day meaningful engagement.
