February focus: The Love Hormone: Oxytocin!

Tuesday, February 1, 2022

The month of February brings Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day stir thoughts of love and belonging. There is a very important neuro-transmitter in our brain called Oxytocin or the love hormone – it is one of the four “feel good” hormones that improves our brain health.

When released it allows us to feel loved, connected and safe. Our persons living with Dementia continues to need the release of this neuro-transmitter for overall well being and brain health much as we do.

As human beings we need to feel connected and loved by others. In absence of this experience we will feel isolated, and disconnected which leads to depression and ultimately may cause death. The good news are that we can release oxytocin every time we interact with our loved ones living with Dementia.

A simple squeeze of the hand, or even holding a hand or arm while taking a walk, a gentle hug around the shoulders, strokes on the back… Any touch delivered in a soothing and caring manner, will cause the release of oxytocin. Furthermore interactions with animals and even cuddling with a soft toy or interacting with an electronic cat or dog releases oxytocin which induces a feeling of calm and belonging. Let’s focus this month to keep our loved ones feeling loved!
