Friday, October 15, 2021

It is very important to realize that many of our persons living with dementia, after an in-patient stay, may struggle with difficulty remembering instructions, and following directions. It is important to note that even Covid patients may present with cognitive issues even if NOT diagnosed with dementia related conditions. (This typically resolves after a few weeks and keeps on improving) Patients with respiratory issues, impacted by a decline in cognition is at a higher risk for re-hospitalization. Red flags to watch for in the home: Patient struggles more with: Using the HRS unit, flutter valve, the spirometer as well as prescribed inhalers and medications.

Person may become easily overwhelmed, agitated, with higher anxiety levels and may present as “non-compliant”. It is important that we recognize their struggles and offer the correct approach, and support to prevent re-hospitalization.

It is important that both the caregiver and person living with dementia are educated together on how to manage their condition. Keep instructions short and simple. Avoid lengthy written handouts. Rather use short statements, for example cue cards, that can be attached to specific pieces of equipment as a quick reminder on how to appropriately engage and follow through. Use the 3 R’s: Routine & Remind & Repeat. Doing it at the same time, in the same way, with the same simple cues and demonstration, will allow your patient to gain confidence and independence over time. Above all: stay patient and slow down! If in doubt ask your OT for a cognitive assessment.
